Birth of Jewish King | Rabbi Jason Sobel
Christmas is a time for family. It’s no coincidence, then, that two of the Gospels begin the Nativity story with genealogies—lists of Yeshua’s ancestors. Rabbi Jason reveals not only why these ancestry lists are meaningful but how their structure is significant. And he also discusses how “letters and numbers” play a vital role in deepening our understanding of these Scripture passages.
Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel uncovers and explores the rich meaning that is waiting in one of the least popular Scripture sections: genealogies. Not in one, but two Gospels, we find these listings of the Lord’s Ancestry, and they are there for a reason.
This teaching will enhance your celebration of Christmas and connect Yeshua’s birth to your life in a powerful way.
Have you noticed that the popularity of ancestry research has increased in recent years? Have you ever wondered why that is? The explosion of technology has made this sort of work less “work” and more fun. Perhaps there’s something deeper at work in this quest than mere curiosity. Similarly, we can’t truly grasp the Christmas story’s deeper meaning without understanding the Lord’s family history (organized in lists known as genealogies).
Before we get too far down the DNA trail, we should consider the significance of Jesus’ Name as He would’ve heard it in Hebrew: Yeshua. It’s a combination of two names. The first is “Ya” which is a short form of the divine name, YHWH. The second name is “Yasha” which means to Save or Deliver. The meaning of Yeshua’s Name reveals His Purpose… “YHWH Saves.” It’s also worth noting that the Lord’s Name connects to another biblical character, Joshua. How do their stories compare? Are there ways in which Joshua foreshadows Yeshua?
Matthew’s Gospel tells us: “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the Babylonian exile are fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian exile until the Messiah are fourteen generations” (Matt 1:17 TLV, emphasis added). One of the themes that will appear regularly in this show is biblical numbers. Numbers are extremely important in Scripture. The Hebrew language is “alpha-numeric,” meaning that numbers are written with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. We need to consider why the number fourteen is central in this genealogy and why it appears three times. A main purpose for these ancestry lists is to establish the Davidic lineage of Yeshua. With this in mind, let’s revisit the alpha-numeric concept. The three consonants in the name David equal…fourteen!
Further, the number fourteen plays a significant part in Israel’s Salvation history. On at least two occasions, world powers conspired to destroy the Jewish people—the Egyptians of the Exodus era and the Persians at the time of Queen Esther. In each one of those stories, the Children of Abraham came precariously close to annihilation. Yet, the Hand of the Lord rescued them on the 14th day of Nisan and Adar (Hebrew month), respectively. These two instances of God’s “Saving Hand” are celebrated during Passover and Purim. And it’s no coincidence, then, that the Hebrew word for “hand” (yad) has a numerical value of fourteen.
Four Women Make an Appearance!
The Ancient Near East culture didn’t think about women the way we commonly do today in Western Civilization. It would’ve been practically unheard of to include women in a genealogy as Matthew did under the Spirit’s inspiration. What is the meaning of this radical decision? There surely are many answers to this question, but a great place to start is to consider what these four women—Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba—have in common: they were ALL Gentiles!
Both Jew and Gentile were essential to the formation of David’s line. And both Jew and Gentile are essential to the fullest expression of God’s Kingdom in the earth. Consider the Words of Yeshua as He prayed in the hours before His death on the cross,
I pray not on behalf of these only, but also for those who believe in Me through their message, that they all may be ONE (John 17:20-21 TLV).
The “these” in the Lord’s Prayer refers to Yeshua’s Jewish disciple, but “those who believe” refers to the Gentiles they would convert. These four women point to what will be the heartbeat of God: Unity across ethnicity through the Messiah.
Identity is Destiny
This desire for Unity is what drives the mission of Fusion Global. The Old and New Testaments, the Jew, and Christian coming together under the Banner of Yeshua, our Messiah. This world will be won when all of God’s Children are one! Unity is a message of profoundly Good News. By Faith in Yeshua, we are ALL the children of Abraham and David, which means we are Royalty. This new identity in Messiah is our Destiny as men and women.
Yeshua came to bring us an abundant Life (John 10:10)—The Life of Royalty!
