Ladies and Gentlemen, one of the great Gospel Evangelists of our generation has departed this realm on December 15, 2009.  Oral Roberts said in a recent interview:

Two things have been guiding principles over these past seventy plus years of ministry.  I know that I hear the Voice of God and 1) I BELIEVE HIM and 2) I DO MY BEST TO OBEY HIM!

This concept can best be summed up in a hymn that is titled:  “Trust and Obey

The music for this song was composed by D. B. Towner, the first director of music at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. The inspiration for the hymn’s writing came in 1886 during and occasion when Towner was leading singing for D. L. Moody in Brockton, Massachusetts.  In a testimony service, he heard a young man say, “I am not quite sure – but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.”

Towner jotted down the words and sent them to his friend J. H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister, who developed the idea into a full hymn. The refrain came first – it is a capsule version of the entire song – and the verses came later.

D. L. Moody said in one occasion:  “The Blood of Christ alone makes us safe. The Word of God alone makes us sure.  Obedience to God makes us happy.”

Oral Roberts taught us all the value of scriptures as he proclaimed Jesus talking to us through His Word, the Holy Bible.  Oral Roberts seemed to know that the Power of God was resident in each of us. I remember well his television programs that encouraged people to realize that:

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them {that are in this world}; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.     1John 4:4

A personal note that you may not know, Evelyn Roberts had passed away in May 2005. Oral and Evelyn were married on Christmas day 1938. I would imagine that Oral may have said something like, ‘Honey, I’ll be home by Christmas and we can celebrate our anniversary once again together.’

Thank You Lord God, for the life and the witness of Oral Roberts, a real Ambassador for Christ!

Amen and Amen!
