Exactly two hundred and twenty years ago today – November 26th 1789, George Washington, our very first President of the newly formed United States of America, proclaimed a “Day of Thanksgiving”.  Several years later, Congress designated the last Thursday of November as a “Day of Thanksgiving”.

So Heavenly Father, today we once again pause from busyness and give YOU THANKS for the many blessings you have bestowed upon America. We are truly a blest nation. You are the ONE Who has led us step by step. Again we say, THANK YOU, Lord!  Amen and Amen!

Here are the scriptural references for today’s prayer of agreement:

The author of Psalms began each of these three stanzas with the same phrase -

Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!  Psalm 105:1

Praise the LORD! Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is Good! For His Mercy endures forever. Psalm 106:1

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is Good! For His Mercy endures forever. Psalm 107:1

In musical terms, this is known as “a hook”, or that phrase of words that will stick in your head. Some people may call this a “mantra” that is repeated over and over again until it becomes part of your breath.  Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is Good! For His Mercy endures forever!

On this day of GIVING THANKS, we are reminded of what is called the “Thanksgiving Hymn”

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known.
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!

We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
